Nandi Charity Shop
The Nandi Charity Shop is a registered charity, with a thriving, very popular shop close to Lagos city centre and a second shop near the “Piri Lampo” café to the south of Lagos town centre. The shops are very popular with both the indigenous portugese and with ex-pats. In fact when regulars know new stock is arriving, there’s barely time to ticket it. The shop is open from 10.00am – 4.00pm 7 days a week.
With the help of some 50 members and 40 volunteers, male and female and of various nationalities, the charity is a thriving community.
From its income, the Nandi Charity shop makes regular contributions to Goldra Animal Sanctuary in Loule and to the more local Bamboo Sanctuary and LAPS. Sheds for cats and kittens, as well as kennels, were built at Goldra using Nandi funds and Bamboo benefited from the provision of fencing and Portakabins.
Anyone coming across a stray cat or dog can approach Nandi for help with sterlisation, providing they agree to ‘adopt’ the animal. The charity assists with the costs of the procedure, as long as it is carried out by one of the Nandi Charity Shop’s nominated vetinary practices.
A street feeding programme is also in operation, manned by a different group of volunteers. Money is spent every month on food and water for feral cats, including a group located near Lagos river estuary. There’s also additional financial help provided for post-accident treatment.
The Nandi Charity shop also supports various “human charities and organisations by donating unsold items to such organisations as NECI, Orphanges, Drug Rehabilitation Centres, Community support offices etc.
In 2009 the Nandi Charity shop assisted financially in the sterilisation of 391 dogs and 820 cats. In addition we provided financial support for “emergency treatment” of 230 cats and dogs as well as 110 vaccinations.
